Athys III

Distinctive styling in the service of useful functions

The Watch Quote™ - November 5th, 2007

Following on from the Athys I and Athys II models successively introduced in 2005 and 2006 and symbolising a “gateway to the horological wonderland of Daniel Roth”, the company based in Le Sentier, a village in the Joux valley with its proud history of mechanical watchmaking, is now releasing the third in a trilogy that proudly conveys the essential brand values of excellence and fine craftsmanship. The Daniel Roth double-ellipse case, with its individually hand-soldered lugs and brand-signature crown featuring seven alternating convex and recessed flutings, is water-resistant to 3 atm and measures 41 x 44 mm. The resulting generous dial opening greatly facilitates legibility, a quality further enhanced by the clearly separate displays, cleverly arranged to achieve a superbly symmetrical layout.

Valuable information, available at a glance

Two discs at 12 o’clock – one white and the other in transparent sapphire – serve to present a ‘seamless’ date indication with no separation between the tens and units. The 45-hour power reserve is indicated across a 180° segment at 4 o’clock, counter-balanced by the poetic moon-phase display between 7 and 8 o’clock – itself spanned by a broader triple-tiered graduated seconds scale reserved for the distinctive Daniel Roth three-arm seconds hand. Nor does the remarkable visual interest of the white-lacquered Athys III dial stop there, since it also carries the line’s trademark railway track minute circle cutting through the radiating Roman numerals.

Exquisite finishing details

As with all Daniel Roth watches, the craftsmen display an unstinting dedication to their work that is expressed through the meticulous attention lavished on even the smallest details – including those invisible to the naked eye . Moreover, devotees of mechanical horology will especially enjoy the view of the inner workings of the Calibre DR 1301 self-winding 28,800 vph movement, visible through the transparent sapphire crystal. Built on a Girard-Perregaux 3330.RL base movement, it features a special module comprising the exclusive date display and is rhodium-plated and adorned with Côtes de Genève.

A model of equilibrium

Clearly designed to embody the finest watchmaking traditions while providing the most practical functional capabilities one could expect from a watch suited to round-the-clock daily wear, the Athys III delivers a powerful message of Daniel Roth’s ongoing commitment to horological continuity and advancement.
