Sunday June 20th 2010 ‐ Pebble Beach, California — Graeme McDowell wins a fantastic victory at the 110th 2010 U.S. Open® golf championship in Pebble Beach, with a final score of 284 strokes in the four rounds. The 30 year‐old player from Northern Ireland made the most of his knowledge of the windy seaside course and of his good current form to pick up the most important title of his career. By the end of the two first days, only nine players were at or below par. McDowell led the field at three under par, two strokes ahead of his nearest rivals.
“I can’t believe it happened”, said McDowell in accepting the winner ’s trophy. “Winning a tournament is always very demanding and winning the U.S. Open® on a course such as Pebble Beach is extraordinarily difficult.” The U.S. Open®, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the professional golf calendar, belongs to the select circle of four “Majors”.
Winner of the Celtic Manor Wales Open two weeks ago, on a course where the Ryder Cup will be held in October, Graeme McDowell has five victories to his credit on the European circuit. Yet this devotee of fine watches and cars has never won anything on the American professional circuit. He has now become the first European in 40 years to win the U.S. Open®, a victory that takes him from 37th to a career‐high 13th spot in the world rankings.
